There was a time when smart young men wore blazers, collars and ties (well, most of us did!) we ironed creases in our trousers, and  we wore LEATHER Shoes!

This group of young men, with the exception of the more elderly gentleman in the middle,  look like they've dressed specially for the occasion but what was the occasion, when was it, and who are they?

Our first response to this "Who, Where and When" photo came from our old friend John Price, who emailed his answer plus a question as follows:-

"Can name almost all in the photo but can't see how to do it on the website!  From left: Steve Rollin, Peter Counsell, 'Coco' Eve, 'Stumpy' Kirkham, Mike Parris, Jimmy (the Wap) Costello, 'Buster' Brown, unknown, Roger Brydon, 'Ding Dong' Ray Bell, Mike Jent, unknown, know but can´t quite remember, Willie McCracken.

Well done to John  who named everyone but two - one of whom was exceptionally difficult!

Editors note -  In answer to John's question about how to do it from the website,  we used to have a Comments section under every article on our website which was well used and often stimulated interest for others to add comments, but we became plagued with scammers who jammed our system with bogus comments and tried to attack our whole system to such a degree that we had to close down the Comments section.  We then introduced a new system which required users to have an individual ID but it seemed to prove to be difficult for most of our members to figure out how to set up a password etc. One of the few people to figure it out was our own Davie Kerr but due to a  recent upgrade of our system it is no longer working at all.

I plan to see if we can sort it out and then send a email to all of our members (for whom we have a CURRENT E-MAIL ADDRESS) providing simple instructions on how you can register and sign in, which would mean you should then be able to write your comments at the bottom of the article you are writing about.

In the meantime you can always send comments to us at info@expobermuda.com  which come directly to me and I will happily add them to the article.

As some of you may realize,  I also post these "Who, Where and When" photos on our ExPo Facebook page which you can view at https://www.facebook.com/BDAExPolice/

Listed below are the comments we received on our Facebook page, along with a final resolution as to the composition of this group, where they travelled and why.

Comments from our ExPo Facebook page

Jeff Baker  -  International Police Association (IPA) trip possibly to New York area 1973-1975?

David 'Dai' Thomas  -   IPA trip to US - 76 or thereabouts

Stephen Rollin  -  Yes I remember it well, guests of the NYPD

Hillary S. Hill -  I recognise a few faces in that photo...takes me back several years ago....wow blast from.the past.....

Davie Kerr -  OK, names to faces time again! "To the best of my knowledge and belief", from left, Steve Rollin, Pete Counsell, John "Coco" Eve, Howard "Stumpy" Kirkham, Mike Parris, Jimmy Costello, Reg "Buster" Brown", no idea (possibly the Governor at the time?), Roger Brydon, Ray Bell, Mike Jent, Wayne Robinson, Dave Barber, Willie McCracken. Shoulder numbers available on request!

Roger "Shoes" Needham  -   Oh and home tel numbers and their vehicle reg numbers please Davie. Many thanks 274 Mike 7 Shoes

Roger Sherratt (Editor)  -  Many thanks once again to Davie Kerr who clearly still has amazing recall and can still remember not only names but also shoulder numbers, telephone numbers and even vehicle numbers. For those who remember having the TCD vehicle registration roladex files we used to have in the Ops Room, what was always striking was that if someone had asked Davie for a 10/37 on a vehicle's registered owner, he would be able to remember it weeks or months later especially if the vehicle has been seen under suspicious circumstances!

Hillary S. Hill  -  Thanks Davie, for putting up everyone's names...you have an amazing memory......

David Kerr   -  I was not hired just for my good looks, you know!

Hillary S. Hill  -  Well that as well Davie...sun bronzed blonde in your sunfish at Admiralty house taking the nurses out for a sail......those were the days....

Brian James Russell    -    Davie Kerr,  well done!

Frankie Bill Foggo  -  Davie Kerr,  ya on de money!!

Mick Lumb  -  Davie Kerr, ice cream consumption?

Davie Kerr  -   No, I'd arrived before that ability came to the fore!  Oddly enough, back in the "compulsory messing" days when we had to pay the then massive sum of £28 a month for our meals in the barracks (whether we ate there or not) a bunch of us were lunching and Malky Smith said "Davie, I'll bet you can't eat two of these little Dixie Cups of ice cream within 100 seconds." Challenge accepted, and a bloke who'd just bought one of those fancy watches that included a stop-watch was elected timekeeper. "Three, two, one, go", and I was off. There was great anticipation of the final result, and not a few surprised expressions when the final time was announced: 49.8 seconds, less than half of the originally stated time!

Roger Sherratt (EDITOR)  -   And we now have the inside story of the above photo from the person who knows exactly "Who, Where and When" - our own retired Inspector Dave Barber who has written the following:-

Bermuda ex Police Association
Dave Barber

The Photograph was taken at Nassau County Police HQ. Long Island New York. It was our first overseas visit by 20 members of the I.P.A. I was the secretary general and went to Nassau in advance months before to help organize activities, which included lunch at the West Point Military academy and many other interesting events. All on the trip stayed with Nassau County Police officers and their families. For years afterwards we had visits by many officers and families from Nassau, Suffolk County and N.Y.P.D. coming on charter flights staying at Sonesta, Grotto Bay, & Holiday Inn. which kept our local I.P.A. section very busy.

Kind Regards,
Dave

Editors notes -  Dave is slowing down these days and doesn't get out much, but when I called him about this photo he was as sharp as a tack!  He sent his best regards to all of ExPo members.  The only person we havn't been able to identify as yet is the officer who headed the Nassau County IPA group and was most helpful in working with Dave to make sure this tour was a great success for all concerned.

NICKNAMES  -  Can't resist one further comment at the expense of our good friend "Davie" Kerr.  On our ExPo website under "EXPO LISTS" at the top of the Home Page, if you click on EXPO LISTS you will find an extensive article about our "List of Nicknames".  I've included  nicknames of just about everyone in the above article, with the exception of "Wee Davie" Kerr who has a whole list of nicknames, rivalled only by Arthur "Headley Love Gladstone Wilberforce Chesterfield" Bean!  "Big Mike" Parris was a creative genius when it came to assigning nicknames to his colleagues, and he has one of the most appropriate  in addition to being known as "Big Mike".  CLICK HERE  to review our List of Nicknames.  If you know of any NOT on our list please send them to me at info@expobermuda.com
